HURRICANE SEASON STARTS JUNE 1ST
RECYCLING RUN 2020
DR. SHRINK FAQs

Hurricane season starts on June 1st and Dr. Shrink is here for you!

Dr. Shrink offers a complete line of shrink wrapping products used to protect and/or compartmentalize structures after natural disasters (such as hurricanes) or while remediation/disaster restoration work is being done. Shrink wrap can be used to easily cover entire buildings, roofs, or other specific areas that are damaged. Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap shrinks “drum-tight” and is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. Our durable, weatherproof covering creates a proper enclosure and protects the project from further or potential damage. We’re stocked with wide and thick shrink wrap to help with your needs during this hurricane season.

Roof repair shouldn’t be tricky.

Dr. Shrink can help you learn how to cover a roof; if you’ve ever wondered about an alternative to a tarp on your roofing project then you’re in the right place. Replace your tarps, which break down over time, with shrink wrap by simply fastening it to your roof and shrinking it with a propane fired heat tool. Dr. Shrink’s shrink wrap has a 2 year warranty and can be fit to any roof.

The Dr. Shrink Advantage:

  • Saves time and money
  • Premium shrink wrap up to 60′ wide and 12-mil thick
  • Sleek, waterproof, durable protection
  • 100% virgin resin material with maximum UV inhibitors for long-term use
  • Our specialty Flame Retardant shrink wrap meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications

Shrink wrap can be applied in the same way as a tarp and offers a wide variety of benefits over products that aren’t able to be custom fit.

  • Shrinking and welding shrink wrap together offers superior weather protection in every environment
  • Shrink’s high quality material is more durable than a tarp, which lends to a longer lasting cover.
  • All of our shrink wrap has UV inhibitors to protect it from UV breakdown
  • Consistent results for a clean, professional look on every project

Identifying what you need to cover is easy and so is applying it when you have Dr. Shrink’s experienced training staff helping you.

Dr. Shrink is a stocking seller of all items listed in the catalog and our experienced staff can help you get the roofing solution you need shipped same or next day.

Our 2020 Recycling Run is still on!

We’ve extended our Recycling Run registration date to July 1st, 2020. If you’d like to be put on our list, all you have to do is purchase our Great Lakes Recycling Bags, then fill out the form, send it back and Katherine from The Michigan Recycling Coalition will be in contact to get you set up with a pickup date and time.

Recycling your shrink wrap is extremely important – and easy! All you need to do is make sure to remove any strapping, zipper doors, vents, etc. and use a Film Knife to cut the shrink wrap cover above the perimeter band. Ball up the cover and stuff into one of our recycling bags and that’s it!

Click here for a quick video on the Simple Steps to Recycling a Shrink Wrap Cover. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions about recycling.

Recycling Run 2020 Registration Form

Dr. Shrink is here to help you with all your questions. Don’t hesitate to give us a call or email us. Below are a few of our most frequently asked questions.

What color shrink wrap should I use? Is there a difference?

Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap comes in blue, white and clear.

  • Blue absorbs sunlight allowing ice and snow to fall off the cover easier during the winter. Used for winter storage and not recommended to be used at a transportation cover.
  • White reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. Best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. White shrink wrap is also the color of choice for work enclosures and scaffolding. It provides shadow-free lighting and good color rendition.
  • Clear shrink wrap is commonly used for greenhouses and non-storage applications.

Know the color you need, but not the recommended mil thickness? Click here to find out more.

Can the heat from the heat tool cause damage?

We must first mention the propane fired heat tool used in shrink wrapping must be used in accordance with the directions in the training DVD. Always remember safety first!

The heat from the heat tool is swept over the cover, almost like spray painting, and is never left on one spot long enough to damage vinyl graphics, paint, gel coat, etc. In fact, the shrink wrap will become thin and holes will form before enough heat is transferred to damage the boat or object. If the shrink wrap should get a burn hole, and it appears the wrap is stuck to the boat, allow the wrap to cool and it will come loose by itself.

How do I repair tear/melt holes in the cover?

It is very easy to repair any holes that are made on a shrink wrap cover. If it is a small hole, a piece of our Heat Shrink Tape will fix it quickly. If is is a larger hole, a scrap of shrink wrap approximately 3″ larger than the hole may be taped on the original cover and lightly shrunk.

Product Details

Our distributor in Japan, Yukikaze Shrink Wrap, has been thinking outside of the boat for quite some time now, since typhoons severely damaged the Tokyo region last fall. Here is some background information provided from the company on their recent roofing applications:

The source of severe damage to many roofs in the Tokyo region was due to typhoons in September and October of 2019. The areas impacted the worst were coastal areas of east and southeast Tokyo, within 100 miles. Approximately 29,000 houses lost power and some areas required up to a month for full utilities and rehabilitation. After the typhoon passed, roof damage was extensive and resulted in thousands of houses in need of repair. People took temporary measures by using plastic sheets, called “Blue Sheet” in Japan. The impacted areas were depopulated, many houses belonging to elderly people, and many of the households could not afford the labor and resources needed to properly repair the roofs. The houses that could not afford the temporary measures in time were subsequently ruined even more by heavy rains which caused inundations and flooding, resulting in an excess of mold.

The “Blue Sheet” tarps that were used for the temporary measures were not durable against the strong wind of the shoreline and lasted only one week, so there were some households that reapplied the sheet several times or some just ultimately gave up. Due to this, our distributor in Japan began to “think outside the boat.” The owners used to live in Florida, and they had experience in the US marine industry; they had knowledge of shrink wrap and the potential it has for disaster restoration and relief. They reached out to volunteer groups which work in typhoon-impacted areas and introduced the idea of using shrink wrap. The groups showed interests in the shrink wrap, so they were given several training sessions of know-hows on shrink wrap operations and implemented repair methods for the roofs.

There were donations from many countries, including Japan, that were sent to volunteer groups in each region. Yukikaze Shrink Wrap gave priority to implement shrink wrap for the houses of elderly people with the funds and the goodwill of volunteer members.

There are many wooden houses in Japan, so the shrink wrap that is used is flame retardant, and the thickness is mainly 9 mil and 12 mil. Also, Japanese houses have a unique roof structure, so it is common to install various operation methods that is best suited to each particular roof. Lastly, the “Blue sheet” that was applied on the house lasted only one week, but the shrink wrap that was applied is still vibrant even after four months have passed.

Great work by Yukikaze Shrink Wrap!

Thank you EVERYONE who donated during our blood drive on March 20th. We had 16 donations and were told that will mean we saved 32 lives! A big thank you to Versiti Blood Center of Michigan/MI Blood for the fantastic care, cleanliness, and professionalism. We appreciate everyone’s efforts.

December 2019 Shrink Wrap News – from the Industry Leader, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. With Thanksgiving being so late in the month this year, it’s hard to believe we are already into the start of December. The staff and I had a nice time over the weekend celebrating the marriage of our team member, Kelly (Buckingham) to Eric Vasquez– congratulations to the newlyweds! We will have several other celebrations this month, including our holiday Christmas party as well as a special visit from Santa Claus for the kids. It should be a great month full of festive events. As we close out 2019 this month, I would once again like to thank you for your business and loyalty over this past year. 2019 has been a fantastic year and I look forward for what is to come in 2020. I appreciate all of you and wish you all the best this holiday season. Happy Holidays!

Some of you may be aware that we have worked with our local animal shelter, Homeward Bound, on several different occasions over the years. One of the projects that we help them with is shrink wrapping the front and back of their building where the kennels are housed to protect the dogs from the wind and winter weather while they are outside.

As shown in the photos, 3/4″ woven cord strapping was run in between each of the beams to support the film. Once the strapping frame was finished, a roll of 12′ x 149′ 7mil white was used to create the “wall”. Around the sides and top, furring strips were rolled onto the film and then screwed into place to secure the film. At the bottom, the wrap was trimmed and then heat welded around a base made of the woven cord strapping to create the bottom. With the entire perimeter of the wall secure, the film was then shrunk down. Furring strips were then tacked to the preexisting beams on the outside of the wall to help limit the amount of movement from the wind.

This is just another way to show that you can use shrink wrap for just about anything. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us. If you are interested in adopting an animal from Homeward Bound, you can visit their website or call 231-723-7387.

  1. Run strapping on bottom and across posts to support the film.

2. Attach film to furring strips and leave 12″ excess for heat weld.

3. Screw on furring strips to posts after film is shrunk for extra support.

DR. SHRINK AWARDS

Dr. Shrink is proud to announce we received top honors as part of the International Boating Industry’s Export Excellence Award. This award was presented last month during IBEX – International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference in Tampa. Congratulations to all of the NMMA members who received awards and top honors– it is great to be connected and working in the same industry as all of these fantastic companies! ATTENTION INDUSTRIAL & TRANSPORTATION CUSTOMERS:

The 2020 edition of the Farmers‘ Almanac predicts that two-thirds of the country will face a colder-than-normalwinter season. The worst of this year’s bitterly cold winter will affect the eastern parts of the Rockies all the way to the Appalachians. The Almanac calls for above-normal winter precipitation over the eastern third of the country as well as the Great Plains, Midwest, and the Great Lakes.

No matter the weather– heavy equipment, large products, and other industrial items still need to be transported and shipped to their final destination, often on an open-bed trailer due to the size. Shrink wrap is your answer to this logistical problem causing weather damage to your product, as it protects all sizes and types of items from the elements. Be sure to read our section below regarding shrink wrap for full encapsulation. Don’t let the winter season and elements wreck havoc on your assets! Make shrink wrapping a year-round business.

DR. SHRINK TIPS & TRICKS

While thinking of the upcoming winter forecast and discussing the shipping, transportation, and industrial markets– it will be helpful to see exactly how shrink wrap is applied for full encapsulation. Take a look below at the diagrams with clickable links to written instructions, or view our How-To Video for Full Encapsulation. Now is the time to tap into this market if you have been considering it! We are here to help you start. To see more pictures of how-to fully encapsulate, click here.

Photo One: Determine Base Roll Width Size: A+24″+24″ = Base Width Roll Size
24″ of additional shrink wrap material around the perimeter width of object

Photo Two: Determine Cover Roll Width Size: X+Y+Z = Cover Roll Width Size
At the widest point, measure from the base of object, up, over, and down the opposite side

Photo Three: Creating Your Seams, Encapsulating & Vent Placement
– Drape wrap over the object, create seams like you are wrapping a present, and trim away any excess wrap. Weld along these seams. After cover is completely shrunk, tape along the weld seams.
– Place vents in the upper 1/4 of the wrapped object to reduce moisture and condensation.

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Hello all, winter is in full swing here with consistent below zero temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills this week. As extreme weather continues to hit the heart of the country, transport your materials with the greatest level of protection using our industrial strength shrink wrap. We have included a section in the newsletter regarding the Trucking and Transportation industry. Shrink wrap offers an easy, affordable, and custom solution to protect your equipment during transportation and storage.
I am excited and proud to announce that Dr. Shrink, Inc. has been awarded the first Global Star Award for 2019 from the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). The Global Star award is a new initiative designed to recognize NMMA members who exemplify export success in recreational boating. Dr. Shrink was recognized for its perseverance and commitment to growing a healthy balance between domestic and international sales.
Hope everyone stays safe and warm in this extreme weather across the nation. Please let us know what we can do for you.”

President & CEO, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

Trucking & Transportation

Manufacturers build and ship a variety of products that come in all types of different shapes and sizes. For those producing large machinery, they face the challenge of properly storing and transporting the product without inflicting damage. With all the hazards that come with the shipping process, including inclement weather conditions effecting the item, shrink wrap minimizes the possibility of damage more effectively than other methods such as tarps.
Protecting your goods through shrink wrap is an investment. With all of the ways a product is capable of receiving damage during the storage and shipment process, protecting it is a matter of loss prevention. Protecting your product is protecting your reputation and business as well.
Visit our website for product information, video tutorials and more. We offer world class customer service and support for all your shrink wrap needs. Call us today to see how we can help: (800) 968-5147.

Dr. Shrink Awarded NMMA First Global Star for 2019

This includes members that demonstrate a commitment to exporting, creating a healthy balance between domestic and international sales, and has built an understanding about why exporting is critical to the long term success of their company.
Dr. Shrink, Inc. has been named the first Global Star for 2019 by the NMMA. Dr. Shrink made our first export sale back in 1997 and has grown our global sales to account for almost 15% of our total annual gross revenue.

Put Your Heat Tool to Work 365 Days a Year

Shrink wrap is becoming the face of protection in many different industries – from construction and scaffolding to industrial and agricultural. It can be used to so many ways, don’t hold yourself to just one industry. The scaffolding and containment industry has been on the rise in the list of industries that are reaping the benefits of shrink wrap protection. Dr. Shrink offers 5 different sizes of Flame Retardant shrink wrap in 7, 9, or 12-mil thicknesses. All of our Flame Retardant film meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications. Scaffolding is easy to wrap with these easy tips. With minimal accessories needed, these techniques will ensure you have a sturdy structure that can withstand the elements.
How to install shrink wrap over scaffolding:
1. Make sure your scaffolding has top and bottom horizontal anchor points. If no poles are available, we recommend attaching steel cable. Tighten securely between each of the uprights the length of your desired shrink wrapping length. We recommend using our 12-mil white shrink wrap for all scaffolding projects. Flame retardant is also available.
2. Begin unfolding the shrink wrap and lapping it over the top support cable. Heat weld the shrink wrap around the cable every 5-6 feet as it is being unfolded to temporarily hold it in place. Note: during the heat weld process, you are bringing the shrink wrap around the cable or scaffold pole and welding the material back to itself. A minimum heat weld of 12 inches is recommended.
3. Once the material is unfolded and spot welded around the top, finish the top heat weld and perform the same operation on the bottom and sides.
4. When all four sides are secured, you are ready to start the shrinking process. Start at the bottom and work up using one continuous motion. After shrinking the entire cover, perform a visual inspection. Seal all holes, tears, and heat welds with our 4″ Heat Shrink Tape.
5. Install our 3/4″ woven cord strapping over the exterior of the shrink wrap in an “X” fashion by tying around the scaffold poles and using our buckle and tension tool system to ensure the banding is extremely tight. The goal here is to prevent the wind from blowing the shrink wrap out away from the scaffolding. Note: for jobs requiring more than one sheet of material, our shrink wrap is easily joined together by overlapping the sheets and heat welding them using one of our premium heat tools.

Quick Refresher on How-To Shrink Wrap a Boat

It’s time for a quick refresher course from the professionals at Dr. Shrink! Click here for our quick 8-minute video that shows you how to wrap a boat for storage with a support structure.
Dr. Shrink supplies premium, 100% virgin resin shrink wrap in widths of 12′ to 60′ in a variety of lengths and mil thicknesses. 6 and 7-mil shrink wrap is recommended for boat storage. Dr. Shrink also supplies a complete line of installation accessories – everything you need to complete your shrink wrap job from start to finish.

Dr. Shrink’s Installation Accessories

Dr. Shrink has all of the installation accessories you need to make you shrink wrap job easier, faster, and cleaner. Here are some of our most popular boat/marine accessories:
– Venting is one of the most important parts of wrapping a boat. A properly ventilated cover will allow cross-flow ventilation throughout the cover, minimizing chances of excess moisture and mildew. Our Weather-Tight Self-Adhesive Vents are easy to install using the one-piece pull tab that exposes over 15 square inches of adhesive. They are water resistant and can be installed either vertically or horizontally. Don’t forget to check out our Weather-Tight Filter Vent – it uses a filter pad inside the vent top to keep dust, bugs, dirt and other debris out of shrink wrapped products.
– Our Heat Shrink Tape is a 9-mil polyethylene tape that is designed to seal pleats, seams and holes as well as install doors. It also has a powerful backing that adheres nicely to shrink wrap. It’s available in blue, white or clear and in a variety of sizes.
– The End Caps and Bottom Caps are designed to fit on the top and bottom of 2×4 boards commonly used as support poles under shrink wrap covers. They have slits every 90° for the woven cord strapping to slide into and when the cover is shrunk, the sections flex downward forming a protective pad on the top to eliminate pole poke-through. Bottom Caps have non-skid discs attached for added stability.
– Dr. Shrink is improving on it’s End Caps with this heavy-duty Rhino Cap. Designed for optimum pierce protection, it features more surface area, greater strength, and strapping grooves to make your strapping structure easier to create and more durable than ever. It’s designed to keep support poles from poking through shrink wrap on storage covers.
– The Professional Film Cutting Knife is used to safely and smoothly cut shrink wrap during installation. No danger of scratching or cutting with its hooked end.
– The Ring Cutter is a convenient strap cutting tool that allows you to keep a blade available throughout the shrink wrap process and cuts our woven cord strapping with ease.
Don’t forget when you order – do you have enough: tape, vents, strapping, buckles or zipper access doors? These are our most common reorder items and can be easily added to any order. If at any time you have questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us. We’re here to help.
