SHRINK WRAP A BOAT FOR STORAGE VIDEO

Brightmark Pilots Recycling Program in Indiana

California-based Brightmark Energy has completed a pilot program for boat shrink wrap collection with a marine services dealer located near the company’s plastics-to-fuel plant in the Steuben County town of Ashley, Indiana. Brightmark says the project, supported by the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District, aimed to divert the boat shrink wrap taken from boats in winter storage from going into the waste stream.

The company says that it can create a second use for the old shrink wrap by turning it into a fuel source for local vehicles and powerboats instead of it ending up in a landfill. With more than 11 million boats registered in the U.S., many of them need to be shrink wrapped in the winter months. With that amount of shrink wrap removed and then recycled properly, it would equal nearly 21,000 barrels of renewable fuel.

Dr. Shrink supplies the REBAG Recycling Kit, which is available to all customers throughout the continental United States, in addition to our annual Recycling Run throughout the state of Michigan. Thank you to everyone who properly recycles your shrink wrap covers every season. You are making a difference and we appreciate your effort to keep this material out of the landfill.

HURRICANE SEASON STARTS JUNE 1ST
RECYCLING RUN 2020
DR. SHRINK FAQs

Hurricane season starts on June 1st and Dr. Shrink is here for you!

Dr. Shrink offers a complete line of shrink wrapping products used to protect and/or compartmentalize structures after natural disasters (such as hurricanes) or while remediation/disaster restoration work is being done. Shrink wrap can be used to easily cover entire buildings, roofs, or other specific areas that are damaged. Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap shrinks “drum-tight” and is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. Our durable, weatherproof covering creates a proper enclosure and protects the project from further or potential damage. We’re stocked with wide and thick shrink wrap to help with your needs during this hurricane season.

Roof repair shouldn’t be tricky.

Dr. Shrink can help you learn how to cover a roof; if you’ve ever wondered about an alternative to a tarp on your roofing project then you’re in the right place. Replace your tarps, which break down over time, with shrink wrap by simply fastening it to your roof and shrinking it with a propane fired heat tool. Dr. Shrink’s shrink wrap has a 2 year warranty and can be fit to any roof.

The Dr. Shrink Advantage:

  • Saves time and money
  • Premium shrink wrap up to 60′ wide and 12-mil thick
  • Sleek, waterproof, durable protection
  • 100% virgin resin material with maximum UV inhibitors for long-term use
  • Our specialty Flame Retardant shrink wrap meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications

Shrink wrap can be applied in the same way as a tarp and offers a wide variety of benefits over products that aren’t able to be custom fit.

  • Shrinking and welding shrink wrap together offers superior weather protection in every environment
  • Shrink’s high quality material is more durable than a tarp, which lends to a longer lasting cover.
  • All of our shrink wrap has UV inhibitors to protect it from UV breakdown
  • Consistent results for a clean, professional look on every project

Identifying what you need to cover is easy and so is applying it when you have Dr. Shrink’s experienced training staff helping you.

Dr. Shrink is a stocking seller of all items listed in the catalog and our experienced staff can help you get the roofing solution you need shipped same or next day.

Recycling Run 2020 Registration Form

Dr. Shrink is here to help you with all your questions. Don’t hesitate to give us a call or email us. Below are a few of our most frequently asked questions.

What color shrink wrap should I use? Is there a difference?

Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap comes in blue, white and clear.

  • Blue absorbs sunlight allowing ice and snow to fall off the cover easier during the winter. Used for winter storage and not recommended to be used at a transportation cover.
  • White reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. Best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. White shrink wrap is also the color of choice for work enclosures and scaffolding. It provides shadow-free lighting and good color rendition.
  • Clear shrink wrap is commonly used for greenhouses and non-storage applications.

Know the color you need, but not the recommended mil thickness? Click here to find out more.

Can the heat from the heat tool cause damage?

We must first mention the propane fired heat tool used in shrink wrapping must be used in accordance with the directions in the training DVD. Always remember safety first!

The heat from the heat tool is swept over the cover, almost like spray painting, and is never left on one spot long enough to damage vinyl graphics, paint, gel coat, etc. In fact, the shrink wrap will become thin and holes will form before enough heat is transferred to damage the boat or object. If the shrink wrap should get a burn hole, and it appears the wrap is stuck to the boat, allow the wrap to cool and it will come loose by itself.

How do I repair tear/melt holes in the cover?

It is very easy to repair any holes that are made on a shrink wrap cover. If it is a small hole, a piece of our Heat Shrink Tape will fix it quickly. If is is a larger hole, a scrap of shrink wrap approximately 3″ larger than the hole may be taped on the original cover and lightly shrunk.

Product Details

Our distributor in Japan, Yukikaze Shrink Wrap, has been thinking outside of the boat for quite some time now, since typhoons severely damaged the Tokyo region last fall. Here is some background information provided from the company on their recent roofing applications:

The source of severe damage to many roofs in the Tokyo region was due to typhoons in September and October of 2019. The areas impacted the worst were coastal areas of east and southeast Tokyo, within 100 miles. Approximately 29,000 houses lost power and some areas required up to a month for full utilities and rehabilitation. After the typhoon passed, roof damage was extensive and resulted in thousands of houses in need of repair. People took temporary measures by using plastic sheets, called “Blue Sheet” in Japan. The impacted areas were depopulated, many houses belonging to elderly people, and many of the households could not afford the labor and resources needed to properly repair the roofs. The houses that could not afford the temporary measures in time were subsequently ruined even more by heavy rains which caused inundations and flooding, resulting in an excess of mold.

The “Blue Sheet” tarps that were used for the temporary measures were not durable against the strong wind of the shoreline and lasted only one week, so there were some households that reapplied the sheet several times or some just ultimately gave up. Due to this, our distributor in Japan began to “think outside the boat.” The owners used to live in Florida, and they had experience in the US marine industry; they had knowledge of shrink wrap and the potential it has for disaster restoration and relief. They reached out to volunteer groups which work in typhoon-impacted areas and introduced the idea of using shrink wrap. The groups showed interests in the shrink wrap, so they were given several training sessions of know-hows on shrink wrap operations and implemented repair methods for the roofs.

There were donations from many countries, including Japan, that were sent to volunteer groups in each region. Yukikaze Shrink Wrap gave priority to implement shrink wrap for the houses of elderly people with the funds and the goodwill of volunteer members.

There are many wooden houses in Japan, so the shrink wrap that is used is flame retardant, and the thickness is mainly 9 mil and 12 mil. Also, Japanese houses have a unique roof structure, so it is common to install various operation methods that is best suited to each particular roof. Lastly, the “Blue sheet” that was applied on the house lasted only one week, but the shrink wrap that was applied is still vibrant even after four months have passed.

Great work by Yukikaze Shrink Wrap!

Thank you EVERYONE who donated during our blood drive on March 20th. We had 16 donations and were told that will mean we saved 32 lives! A big thank you to Versiti Blood Center of Michigan/MI Blood for the fantastic care, cleanliness, and professionalism. We appreciate everyone’s efforts.

February 2020 Shrink Wrap News – from the Industry Leader, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

Hello Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill out our Customer Survey this past month. I read everyone’s comments, ideas, critiques, and suggestions and have added several to my task and implementation list. I greatly appreciate all the feedback!

The sales team and I have a pretty busy month of travel ahead. If you are in the shrink wrap installation business, always remember to “think outside the boat” when you travel. There is almost always something on the road or sitting outdoors that could use shrink wrap protection. Please continue to send photos to me or our marketing team of all your shrink wrap jobs — I am always impressed by the new applications and fantastic work. Hope you all have a great February — 2020 is off to an excellent start! Thank you for working with us.

Dr. Shrink is excited to introduce our all new Bottom Cap! The Dr. Shrink Bottom Cap has been redesigned into a smaller, more skid proof version with flexible plastic to be easily installed on a 2×4 support post. This upgraded quality of material offers less scratching on boat decks and better stability by reducing movement of the support post on the boat deck.

Dimensions of the new Bottom Cap are 5.75″ x 3.75″ taking up less space (and cheaper to ship)!

Dr. Shrink is still currently selling our original Bottom Cap – this new style will be available soon! Below is the bottom view, side view and top view of the new Bottom Cap.

December 2019 Shrink Wrap News – from the Industry Leader, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. With Thanksgiving being so late in the month this year, it’s hard to believe we are already into the start of December. The staff and I had a nice time over the weekend celebrating the marriage of our team member, Kelly (Buckingham) to Eric Vasquez– congratulations to the newlyweds! We will have several other celebrations this month, including our holiday Christmas party as well as a special visit from Santa Claus for the kids. It should be a great month full of festive events. As we close out 2019 this month, I would once again like to thank you for your business and loyalty over this past year. 2019 has been a fantastic year and I look forward for what is to come in 2020. I appreciate all of you and wish you all the best this holiday season. Happy Holidays!

Some of you may be aware that we have worked with our local animal shelter, Homeward Bound, on several different occasions over the years. One of the projects that we help them with is shrink wrapping the front and back of their building where the kennels are housed to protect the dogs from the wind and winter weather while they are outside.

As shown in the photos, 3/4″ woven cord strapping was run in between each of the beams to support the film. Once the strapping frame was finished, a roll of 12′ x 149′ 7mil white was used to create the “wall”. Around the sides and top, furring strips were rolled onto the film and then screwed into place to secure the film. At the bottom, the wrap was trimmed and then heat welded around a base made of the woven cord strapping to create the bottom. With the entire perimeter of the wall secure, the film was then shrunk down. Furring strips were then tacked to the preexisting beams on the outside of the wall to help limit the amount of movement from the wind.

This is just another way to show that you can use shrink wrap for just about anything. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us. If you are interested in adopting an animal from Homeward Bound, you can visit their website or call 231-723-7387.

  1. Run strapping on bottom and across posts to support the film.

2. Attach film to furring strips and leave 12″ excess for heat weld.

3. Screw on furring strips to posts after film is shrunk for extra support.

DR. SHRINK AWARDS

Dr. Shrink is proud to announce we received top honors as part of the International Boating Industry’s Export Excellence Award. This award was presented last month during IBEX – International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference in Tampa. Congratulations to all of the NMMA members who received awards and top honors– it is great to be connected and working in the same industry as all of these fantastic companies! For the full article, please click here.

ATTENTION INDUSTRIAL & TRANSPORTATION CUSTOMERS:

The 2020 edition of the Farmers‘ Almanac predicts that two-thirds of the country will face a colder-than-normalwinter season. The worst of this year’s bitterly cold winter will affect the eastern parts of the Rockies all the way to the Appalachians. The Almanac calls for above-normal winter precipitation over the eastern third of the country as well as the Great Plains, Midwest, and the Great Lakes.

No matter the weather– heavy equipment, large products, and other industrial items still need to be transported and shipped to their final destination, often on an open-bed trailer due to the size. Shrink wrap is your answer to this logistical problem causing weather damage to your product, as it protects all sizes and types of items from the elements. Be sure to read our section below regarding shrink wrap for full encapsulation. Don’t let the winter season and elements wreck havoc on your assets! Make shrink wrapping a year-round business.

DR. SHRINK TIPS & TRICKS

While thinking of the upcoming winter forecast and discussing the shipping, transportation, and industrial markets– it will be helpful to see exactly how shrink wrap is applied for full encapsulation. Take a look below at the diagrams with clickable links to written instructions, or view our How-To Video for Full Encapsulation. Now is the time to tap into this market if you have been considering it! We are here to help you start. To see more pictures of how-to fully encapsulate, click here.

Photo One: Determine Base Roll Width Size: A+24″+24″ = Base Width Roll Size
24″ of additional shrink wrap material around the perimeter width of object

Photo Two: Determine Cover Roll Width Size: X+Y+Z = Cover Roll Width Size
At the widest point, measure from the base of object, up, over, and down the opposite side

Photo Three: Creating Your Seams, Encapsulating & Vent Placement
– Drape wrap over the object, create seams like you are wrapping a present, and trim away any excess wrap. Weld along these seams. After cover is completely shrunk, tape along the weld seams.
– Place vents in the upper 1/4 of the wrapped object to reduce moisture and condensation.

Pumpkin Carving Fun!
Dr. Shrink was in the Halloween spirit with some pumpkin carving and games last weekend! We had some great big pumpkins, perfect for carving, fresh from Miller’s Produce here in Manistee. Take a look at the full photo album on our Facebook page.

DR. SHRINK FEATURED INDUSTRIES – Residential Roofing

These photos show shrink wrap being used as a temporary fix for a leaky roof until the entire roof could be repaired. Wood strips were used along the perimeter of the gutter line and the installer made his own lines with strapping to attach the shrink wrap to. Rope repel gear and an 80′ man-lift was used to shrink the job once attached. Photos courtesy of Jason Hebb and team in Delta, BC Canada. Great work and thank you for sharing your photos!
