December 2019 Shrink Wrap News – from the Industry Leader, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. With Thanksgiving being so late in the month this year, it’s hard to believe we are already into the start of December. The staff and I had a nice time over the weekend celebrating the marriage of our team member, Kelly (Buckingham) to Eric Vasquez– congratulations to the newlyweds! We will have several other celebrations this month, including our holiday Christmas party as well as a special visit from Santa Claus for the kids. It should be a great month full of festive events. As we close out 2019 this month, I would once again like to thank you for your business and loyalty over this past year. 2019 has been a fantastic year and I look forward for what is to come in 2020. I appreciate all of you and wish you all the best this holiday season. Happy Holidays!

Some of you may be aware that we have worked with our local animal shelter, Homeward Bound, on several different occasions over the years. One of the projects that we help them with is shrink wrapping the front and back of their building where the kennels are housed to protect the dogs from the wind and winter weather while they are outside.

As shown in the photos, 3/4″ woven cord strapping was run in between each of the beams to support the film. Once the strapping frame was finished, a roll of 12′ x 149′ 7mil white was used to create the “wall”. Around the sides and top, furring strips were rolled onto the film and then screwed into place to secure the film. At the bottom, the wrap was trimmed and then heat welded around a base made of the woven cord strapping to create the bottom. With the entire perimeter of the wall secure, the film was then shrunk down. Furring strips were then tacked to the preexisting beams on the outside of the wall to help limit the amount of movement from the wind.

This is just another way to show that you can use shrink wrap for just about anything. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 800-968-5147 or email us. If you are interested in adopting an animal from Homeward Bound, you can visit their website or call 231-723-7387.

  1. Run strapping on bottom and across posts to support the film.

2. Attach film to furring strips and leave 12″ excess for heat weld.

3. Screw on furring strips to posts after film is shrunk for extra support.

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Hope everyone is having a great finish to their summer season. Our fall mailers have been mailed out, new product catalogs are here, and the early-buy shrink wrap discount is in full swing. If you did not receive a fall price sheet in the mail and would like one, please call us at 231-723-2685 or 800-968-5147 and we’ll make sure you are added to our list.
Remember that shrink wrap is used for more than just recreation boats, pontoon boats, and other marine related products. It’s widely used to weather protect outdoor patio furniture, outdoor kitchens, lawn and garden equipment, pools, and everything else that gets put away after the summer season. If you have questions on wrapping certain items, we are here to help. In the mean time, please see our Videos & Resources section below to get a better handle on shrink wrapping many of these items.
Hope everyone has a fantastic Labor Day weekend. Contact me anytime with questions or comments and thank you for working with us.”

Dr. Shrink Videos & Resources

For  Marine and Recreation applications, we typically recommend a 6 or 7-mil material. The 6-mil is our thinnest shrink wrap and is used for smaller items such as boats, shed frames, pallets, and machinery that will be stored rather than transported. Our 7-mil material is the standard thickness for shrink wrapping boats in snow load areas, light construction jobs, and medium sized machinery. We offer 3 different colors of shrink wrap, all of which are made for different applications.
White shrink wrap works best for the majority of shrink wrapping applications. It reflects the sun and stays tight in all weather conditions making it ideal for transportation. Because of its ability to reflect the sun, the temperature beneath the film stays more consistent, thereby minimizing condensation and moisture build up under the cover.
Blue shrink wrap is generally used in snow-load areas as the darker color helps absorb the heat from the sun.  The warmth of the wrap assists in melting any accumulated snow on the cover much faster than that of the white.  Because of this, your boat will not have to shoulder that additional weight for as long. On the flip-side; because this film easily absorbs heat it makes it a less viable option for warmer climates.  The heat build up under the blue shrink wrap in warmer conditions could potentially cause heat damage to its contents.  In addition, the possibility for ‘loosening’ of the film is higher in hot weather, which does not make it the ideal choice for transportation.
Clear shrink wrap is most commonly used to cover greenhouses, brokerage items, and even live-aboard boats. The advantage of using clear is that you can see through it.  The disadvantage, however, is that the sun penetrates the covers and can accentuate the buildup of moisture/sun damage under the cover. Care must be taken to properly ventilate clear covers in an effort to help prevent damage.

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. It was a hot one in Manistee, reaching temperatures of almost 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The SeatSaver, Rhino Cap, and Lightning Vent are the perfect additions to our innovative product line.

Construction & Scaffolding Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction & Scaffolding Industry. The construction industry can yield huge profit margins and is a 12 month shrink wrap business. Government and large building contacts will often require scaffolding and exterior containment and shrink wrap is the most cost effective and durable material that can be used. Available in Extreme 12-mil and up to 60′ in width, with Flame Retardant sizes also available, the Dr. provides the largest rolls of film available on the market.
A construction site can be a vulnerable place. Whether it’s the construction of a new building or renovation/add-on to an existing one, there’s the risk of weather eroding all the hard work or ceasing it for a long period of time. For example, water damage – whether it’s rain entering the structure, melting snow, or leaks – is the most frequent cause of loss during building projects. Shrink wrapping a building or scaffolding on a construction site means not only protecting the work, but workers and productivity as well.
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap shrinks “drum-tight” and is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. This durable, weatherproof covering creates a proper enclosure and protects the project from potential damage. Additionally, our shrink wrap creates an improved work environment. Our white shrink wrap allows natural, shadow-free lighting while blocking harmful UV rays. Worker downtime is reduced and the enclosure can even be heated and cooled.

Frequently Asked Questions on Shrink Wrap / Dr. Shrink, Inc.

* To see the entire post, click here.

Your Frequently Asked Questions – Answered!

Dr. Shrink is proud to offer you world class customer service. Our highly experienced staff are ready to field any questions you can throw at them in the many industries of shrink wrap. Below are a few common questions we receive as people are learning about shrink wrap and becoming familiar with the process. Do you have questions? Ask us here and we will be in touch immediately!

What color shrink wrap should I use? Is there a difference?

Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap comes in blue, white and clear.
– Blue absorbs sunlight allowing ice & snow to fall off of the cover easier during the winter. Used for winter storage and not recommended to be used at a transportation cover.
– White reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. Best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. White shrink wrap is also the color of choice for work enclosures and scaffolding. It provides shadow-free lighting and good color rendition.
– Clear shrink wrap is commonly used for greenhouses and non-storage applications
Know the color you need, but not the recommended mil thickness? Click here.

Can the heat from the heat tool cause damage?

We must first mention the propane fired heat tools used in shrink wrapping must be used in accordance with the directions in the training DVD. Always remember safety first! The heat from the tool is swept over the cover, almost like spray painting, and is never left on one spot long enough to damage vinyl graphics, paint, gel coat, etc. In fact, the shrink wrap will become thin and holes will form before enough heat is transferred to damage the boat or object. If the shrink wrap should get a burn hole, and it appears the wrap is stuck to the boat, allow the wrap to cool and it will come loose by itself.

How do I repair tear/melt holes in the cover?

It is very easy to repair any holes that are made on a shrink wrap cover. If it is a small hole, a piece of our Heat Shrink Tape will fix it quickly. If it is a larger hole, a scrap of shrink wrap approximately 3″ larger than the hole may be taped on the original cover and lightly shrunk.

Are you more of a hands-on learner? Consider our SWU training class.

Learn from the best– learn from the source! Dr. Shrink prides itself on providing world class customer service, professional training, and installation advice.
ShrinkWrap University (SWU) is a one-day training course designed to give you all the information you need to shrink wrap anything. The morning consists of presentations in a classroom setting (product information, safety and techniques, industry applications and profit margins, as well as marketing services).  After presentations, we will head back to the warehouse where you will gain an enormous amount of hands-on training and advice.  You will leave here very comfortable and with the propane fired heat tool and the shrink wrapping process.

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Spring is in the air lately in Manistee, Michigan! The snow has started to melt and the temperatures are reaching into the high 40s. I was able to look through each participant’s submission photos and the quality of work was outstanding! Even though the giveaway is over, please keep the photos coming as I enjoy seeing what our customers are up to and the new and unique applications shrink wrap is used for. Feel free to email them to us any time.
The trucking and transportation industry has been fresh on my mind lately. Please be sure to read through the section below for information on this industry. Now is the time to tap into new and developing markets such as trucking and transportation– we are here to help you as you expand into more industries.

Transportation Across Countries

Pronto Clearing3This shrink wrapped catamaran boat was transported from Cape Town, South Africa to Mombasa, Kenya. It was a 5500 km (roughly 3,417 miles) road journey that took 11 days. When it arrived in Kenya, it still looked brand new! The installers used an 8 mil white wrap which is perfect because the white reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. It’s best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. Have questions about what color would work best for your application? Click here to see the differences in the 3 main colors – blue, white and clear.
An 8 mil thickness is excellent for covering large boats, shrink wrapping large building frames, and for wrapping large equipment with sharp protrusions for transportation or storage. But if you want thicker– we have it! Click here to see what shrink wrap mil thickness is right for your job.

Think Spring & Think Recycling!

With the first day of Spring just around the corner – on March 20th to be exact; it’s time to enjoy the warmer weather and removing those shrink wrap covers. Dr. Shrink wants to help you with recycling your shrink wrap covers; we have two different programs in place to make it an easy process for you.
We are once again partnering with Bay Area Recycling (BARC) this year for our Recycling Run Program. If you are in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois or Ohio — our Recycling Run is available to you. The program is simple and easy:
– Buy Dr. Shrink’s EZ-Fill Bags for only $5.00 each from Dr. Shrink
– Stuff the EZ-Fill Bag with ONLY shrink wrap
– Return the Registration Form to Dr. Shrink to have your pick-up scheduled with BARC.
Our REBAG® Recycling Kit is a different recycling option that we offer.  The REBAG® Kit works across the Continental US. The kit consists of a 30″ x 50″ clear bag with cover removal directions printed on it, a closure device for the bag and a prepaid FedEx shipping label. Each REBAG® will hold the cover from a 26′ power boat or approximately 600 square feet. *Note: All strapping, buckles, vents, zipper doors, etc. must be removed prior to packing the cover in the bag.
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap is a 100% virgin resin material that is easily recycled into a variety of usable consumer products. Shrink wrap will NOT biograde in a landfill – that’s why it is extremely important to recycle. If neither of these programs work for you, we please ask that you call around to local recycling facilities in your area and see if they will accept this premium #4 LDPE plastic.

Sling-Shield from Dr. Shrink

Sling-Shield is used to protect boat lift slings and vessel hulls during launch and haul-out. It rinses off completely so as to not transfer dirt, grime, etc. from one boat to another and keeps slings clean which extends sling life. Sling-Shield is a simple, one man installation system. It is simply pulled over the sling, cut from the roll and then taped in place.
When boats with bottom paint are lifted by a boat lift, the slings tend to peel the paint from the hull – the Sling-Shield helps stop damage to the bottom paint. It’s also used as a tube to direct air into a boat during service or assembly when attached to a fan or air conditioner. It can also exhaust dust and fumes from inside holds, engine compartments and cabins during service, for personal safety during repairs and assembly. The Sling-Shield will shrink with very little heat; it can be used to protect sail boat masts during transportation and storage.

Work Year Round: Shrink Wrap for the Construction/Scaffold Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction Industry. A construction site can be a vulnerable place – whether it’s the construction of a new building or renovation/add-on to an existing one, there’s the risk of weather eroding all the hard work or ceasing it for a long period of time. For example, water damage – whether it’s rain entering the structure, melting snow, or leaks – is the second most frequent case of loss during building projects.
Dr. Shrink stocks a complete line of products that are capable of wrapping large buildings and scaffolding. Our shrink wrap system is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. Shrink wrap creates a proper enclosure and protects your project from potential damage. Dr. Shrink shrink wrap creates an improved work environment because it allows natural, shadow-free lighting while blocking harmful UV rays. Worker downtime is reduced and the enclosure can even be heated and cooled.
For buildings, an attachment system is placed around the entire base of the building. When the shrink wrap is draped over, it requires immediate attachment. Attach the shrink wrap along the base, pulling any looseness out of the material. Once secured, the entire wrap is heated and shrunk starting from the base and moving upward. If you have any questions about applications, please feel free to give us a call at 800.968.5147 or email us. We’re always here to help.
