Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday with family and friends. Dr. Shrink had a nice holiday party with our team in early December followed by a visit from Santa for the kids.

We are hosting a blood drive next Wednesday, January 12th from 9am – 3pm. If you are not local, please consider donating at a blood drive near you as there are shortages at blood banks all over the nation. There is a link to sign up to our blood drive in the section below.

We had our annual Dr. Shrink Employee Christmas Party and the kids had a visit from Santa last month. It was nice to be able to get together and celebrate a great year. We are looking forward to another great year.

As we launch into the busy holiday season at the same time as we conclude our busy marine season, there are two things I’d like to take the time to mention:

Number 1: Our industry was met with unprecedented challenges this season and we all met those challenges head-on, together. As you are aware, the winterization industry in general experienced longer than normal manufacturing and delivery times, and shipping across all carriers experienced delays due to staff shortages and terminal back-ups. We worked together and got through this together, and I would like to say thank you for your understanding and patience through a tumultuous season.

And number 2: I reflect on how thankful I am. Thankful to lead this incredible team at Dr. Shrink, and thankful to have the relationship I have with all of you, our valued customers, distributors and friends. The past 20 months have been filled with highs and lows, and I am humbled by the support, outreach and determination to continue to advance our industry. We would not be here today if it wasn’t for all of you. I hope we have surpassed your expectations in both customer service and supplying the highest quality shrink wrap materials in the market.

On behalf of all of us here at Dr. Shrink, I wish you, your family and friends well and I hope you have a very happy holiday season.

As we say goodbye to the first half of the year, we turn the calendars over to begin preparations for the busy marine season which will be quickly approaching. With that in mind, we want to continue to provide you, our valued customers, with the latest news on the shrink wrap industry and the current price increases the market has been experiencing.

Please read through our section below regarding the shrink wrap price increases. As most of you are already aware, we have experienced several increases from August 2020 to date. There have been many variables and ever-evolving changes world-wide that have impacted these increases over the months; from weather induced natural disasters, political climate, raw material shortages, simple supply and demand, and several others obstacles.

Dr. Shrink has tried to be as transparent as possible regarding these market changes and price increases, and we want you prepared with this information before fall ordering. Be Prepared for Higher Shrink Wrap Prices This Season

We would like to address a couple things to better prepare you before the busy fall season hits. 

SHRINK WRAP PRICE INCREASES
Resin increases have continued to hammer the market on raw material (polyethylene). Over the past 12 months, polyethylene costs are up 42% which directly effects shrink wrap pricing, as polyethylene is the main component in shrink wrap. Due to this we want all customers to be prepared in knowing that shrink wrap prices will be over 40% higher this fall (compared to last fall). Please note Dr. Shrink is only passing along the exact increase on raw material as it is received from resin producers. There are no additional production costs, or other fees impacting these increases. These resin/raw material increases are market-wide and non-negotiable; no manufacturers, distributors, or customers are exempt from them. We assure you our pricing is just as competitive today as it was early last year, in the current market.

SALES TAX ON ORDERS
In an effort to remain compliant with current tax law, Dr. Shrink has also implemented a new sales tax policy. All tax-exempt customer accounts will require a valid sales tax exemption form from their respective states.  This certificate will be kept securely on-file with our tax partner, Avalara.  If you are unsure if your sales tax exemption form is currently on file, or need to submit one, please give us a call at 800-968-5147, or email customerservice@dr-shrink.com with the email subject notated as ‘tax form’. Please allow a 5-7 business day processing period for multi-jurisdictional forms.

**It is important to note that all orders processed without a form on file will be charged tax.  This tax charge is NON-REFUNDABLE as Dr. Shrink remits tax to these states upon invoicing.  Please be sure to submit all tax information prior to order placement.**

Introducing Dr. Shrink's New Reinforced Shrink Wrap!

Dr. Shrink’s new Reinforced Shrink Wrap is designed for shrink wrap applications requiring higher durability and protection over the use of non-reinforced standard shrink wrap.

Our Reinforced Shrink Wrap is a white four-layer shrink wrap that combines the strength of scrim-reinforcement with the heat shrink properties of conventional shrink wrap. This product is engineered to be lightweight and flexible for exceptional cold-crack resistance in low temperatures. The outer layers consist of an opaque white high-strength polyethylene film with added U.V. and thermal stabilizers to reduce heat build-up beneath the enclosure, condensation, and to provide exposed outdoor longevity of approximately 1 year.

Dr. Shrink’s Reinforced Shrink Wrap is highly pliable and allows for easy heat-weld fusing during packaging to efficiently enclose large or difficult shapes and eliminate the costs of cover packing materials in shipping and storage. A heavy-duty scrim reinforcement is placed between the plies to maximize tear-resistance and increase service life.

Technical Info:
This shrink wrap is reinforced with a minimum 1000 denier scrim laid in a diagonal pattern spaced 3/8” apart for added strength and stability. The individual plies are laminated together with molten polyethylene for pin-hole free durability. The diamond reinforcement pattern provides uniform tear resistance in all directions through superior tensile and puncture properties to resist and stop tear propagation.

**Dr. Shrink's SuperGrip Tape is the ONLY tape that will stick to our Reinforced Shrink Wrap** (DS-SUPERGRIP)

April is here and we were beginning to welcome the first signs of Spring the last couple weeks, until last evening and this morning when it was snowing, blowing, and felt like 11 degrees Fahrenheit– typical Michigan weather for you! We are looking forward to beautiful spring weather coming soon. That means it is time to start thinking about removing those shrink wrap boat covers that have served you well during the harsh winter months. We want to remind you all to do your part and be sure to recycle your old, used shrink wrap.

For those in Michigan, you can purchase our EZ-Fill bags and schedule your pick-up with our recycling partners! If you are located outside of Michigan, you can still recycle your shrink wrap film. Reasons For Resin and Shrink Wrap Increases

In the wake of resin increases continuing to hammer the market on raw material (polyethylene), we thought it best to provide a brief explanation of how this affects our highly valued customer base. 

As most of you are already aware, we have experienced a total increase of $0.43/lb. from August of 2020 to date. 

There have been many variables and ever-evolving changes world-wide that have impacted these increases over the months; from weather induced natural disasters, political climate, raw material shortages, simple supply and demand, and several others, to name a few. 

We understand that increases, especially in this capacity, are never a welcomed change. That said, we assure you that we are passing along only the exact increase on raw material as it is received from our manufacturers. There are no additional production costs, or other fees impacting these increases. 

These resin/raw material increases are market-wide and non-negotiable; no manufacturers, distributors, or customers are exempt from them. We assure you our pricing is just as competitive today as it was early last year, in the current market. 

To be as transparent as possible, we are hearing from our manufacturers that it is likely we will see pricing continue to climb through April. We, like all of you, hope to see these increases taper off sooner rather than later and will update you if/when that begins to happen.

Reasons for Resin and Shrink Wrap Price Increases

Polyethylene trading roared back to life after the New Year rang in, the spot market had largely been starved of material during December and buyers returned from the holidays in need of resin. Several ongoing production issues have greatly restricted Polyethylene supplies and since the start of the year, a massive monomer rally, spurred along by cracker outages, has further complicated the situation.  

As of February 22nd, 2021, we received word that an additional resin increase has hit the industry on raw material (polyethylene) due to the inclement weather in Texas which caused production facilities to shut down and further limit supply of resins. 

We understand that price increases are never a welcomed change, but we assure you that we are doing everything in our power to keep your pricing as competitive as possible in today’s market.

Please be aware that the price fluctuation you see on shrink wrap products reflects the exact increase that has hit the market ($0.31 USD overall in 2020-21), and not a cent more. As a valued customer, we take the utmost care in offering you the best price possible on the highest quality product to ensure your business ventures are a success.

Detailed 2020/2021 product increases to date:

August 26th, 2020: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

September 10th, 2020: $0.04/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

November 18th, 2020: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

January 11th, 2021: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap – 7% on VCI film.

February 15th, 2021: $0.05/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap as well as increases on tape, poly sheeting, vents, caps, misc. plastic accessories, strapping, buckles, Shrinkfast heat tools, parts, and accessories.

February 22nd, 2021: $0.07/lb on Standard and Flame Retardant Shrink Wrap.

Recycle Your Used Shrink Wrap!

Dr. Shrink is one of the largest suppliers of shrink wrap across the globe, and while offering premium and high-quality products, recycling of used shrink wrap continues to be a top priority for us.

“Taking care of our environment that we, as boat owners and outdoor recreation enthusiasts, all enjoy, should be a top priority,” says Mike Stenberg, President & Founder of Dr. Shrink, Inc. “With a little bit of effort and education, we can all do our part and recycle our old, used shrink wrap for free or very little cost.”

All of Dr. Shrink’s film is 100% virgin resin made of #4 Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE). This is one of the most common plastic materials available, and its recycled contents is frequently used in plastic lumber, construction sheeting, and garbage bags. Many boat owners think of our shrink wrap as a “plastic bag” which is not commonly recycled at your local recycling center, however, our material is different.

To start, pick up the phone and contact your local recycling center and ask them if they will accept “#4 LDPE plastic sheeting”. Some locations may require you to provide documentation, and Dr. Shrink is happy to help; you can access specification documents online at: dr-shrink.com/recycling, or you can email us at: recycle@dr-shrink.com and we will be more than happy to assist. From there, remember to: Keep it C.0.0.L. To ensure your wrap is accepted at the local recycling center, be sure it is clean, has zero accessories (such as strapping, buckles, vents, or zipper doors), has zero moisture and is dry, and finally, is loosely packed for easily handling and sorting when it arrives at the local recycling center.

Recycling and environmental stewardship is not a new concept to Dr. Shrink, we have pioneered a number of recycling programs throughout the country.

As we saw our first snowfall of the season a week ago, we are now heading into the cold weather months for half of the U.S. With that, we wanted to highlight some of the other ways that you can continue to utilize your equipment throughout the year.

I often get asked about what other industries utilize shrink wrapping outside of the Marine & Recreation market and I have to say that disaster relief/restoration and roofing has been a strong shrink wrap business that has really emerged over the past couple years. With the hurricanes, tornados and other major weather events that continue to pop up across the globe, the shrink wrap industry has responded in a big way.
