Your Frequently Asked Questions – Answered!

Dr. Shrink is proud to offer you world class customer service. Our highly experienced staff are ready to field any questions you can throw at them in the many industries of shrink wrap. Below are a few common questions we receive as people are learning about shrink wrap and becoming familiar with the process. Do you have questions? Ask us here and we will be in touch immediately!

What color shrink wrap should I use? Is there a difference?

Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap comes in blue, white and clear.
– Blue absorbs sunlight allowing ice & snow to fall off of the cover easier during the winter. Used for winter storage and not recommended to be used at a transportation cover.
– White reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. Best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. White shrink wrap is also the color of choice for work enclosures and scaffolding. It provides shadow-free lighting and good color rendition.
– Clear shrink wrap is commonly used for greenhouses and non-storage applications
Know the color you need, but not the recommended mil thickness? Click here.

Can the heat from the heat tool cause damage?

We must first mention the propane fired heat tools used in shrink wrapping must be used in accordance with the directions in the training DVD. Always remember safety first! The heat from the tool is swept over the cover, almost like spray painting, and is never left on one spot long enough to damage vinyl graphics, paint, gel coat, etc. In fact, the shrink wrap will become thin and holes will form before enough heat is transferred to damage the boat or object. If the shrink wrap should get a burn hole, and it appears the wrap is stuck to the boat, allow the wrap to cool and it will come loose by itself.

How do I repair tear/melt holes in the cover?

It is very easy to repair any holes that are made on a shrink wrap cover. If it is a small hole, a piece of our Heat Shrink Tape will fix it quickly. If it is a larger hole, a scrap of shrink wrap approximately 3″ larger than the hole may be taped on the original cover and lightly shrunk.

Are you more of a hands-on learner? Consider our SWU training class.

Learn from the best– learn from the source! Dr. Shrink prides itself on providing world class customer service, professional training, and installation advice.
ShrinkWrap University (SWU) is a one-day training course designed to give you all the information you need to shrink wrap anything. The morning consists of presentations in a classroom setting (product information, safety and techniques, industry applications and profit margins, as well as marketing services).  After presentations, we will head back to the warehouse where you will gain an enormous amount of hands-on training and advice.  You will leave here very comfortable and with the propane fired heat tool and the shrink wrapping process.
Keep the questions coming! We want you to be the best in the business. Feel free to e-mail your questions directly here, or call us anytime at 1-800-968-5147.

Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“Spring is in the air lately in Manistee, Michigan! The snow has started to melt and the temperatures are reaching into the high 40s. I have a couple of busy upcoming months for international travel, starting in Australia, onto Shanghai, then Germany, and finally Spain. Just because I’m across the globe doesn’t mean I’m inaccessible– email me anytime.
I’d like to personally thank each and every person who submitted photos for our Shrinkfast giveaway to help with our photo collection. I was able to look through each participant’s submission photos and the quality of work was outstanding! Even though the giveaway is over, please keep the photos coming as I enjoy seeing what our customers are up to and the new and unique applications shrink wrap is used for. Feel free to email them to us any time.
The trucking and transportation industry has been fresh on my mind lately. Please be sure to read through the section below for information on this industry. Now is the time to tap into new and developing markets such as trucking and transportation– we are here to help you as you expand into more industries.

We would like to congratulate Kip W. in Montana on being the winner of our Shrinkfast® Giveaway! He won a Shrinkfast® 998 Heat Tool Kit and a 4′ Extension! Thank you to everyone who participated in our photo contest and helped grow our photo library. A big thank you to Shrinkfast® for partnering with us for this promotion.

Transportation Across Countries

Pronto Clearing3This shrink wrapped catamaran boat was transported from Cape Town, South Africa to Mombasa, Kenya. It was a 5500 km (roughly 3,417 miles) road journey that took 11 days. When it arrived in Kenya, it still looked brand new! The installers used an 8 mil white wrap which is perfect because the white reflects sunlight and harmful UV rays. It’s best used for transportation covers and general outside storage. Have questions about what color would work best for your application? Click here to see the differences in the 3 main colors – blue, white and clear.
An 8 mil thickness is excellent for covering large boats, shrink wrapping large building frames, and for wrapping large equipment with sharp protrusions for transportation or storage. But if you want thicker– we have it! Click here to see what shrink wrap mil thickness is right for your job.

Do you have a project that you’re not sure what size to use, mil thickness or color? Email us some pictures with dimensions and details – we’ll give you our professional recommendation.

Think Spring & Think Recycling!

With the first day of Spring just around the corner – on March 20th to be exact; it’s time to enjoy the warmer weather and removing those shrink wrap covers. Dr. Shrink wants to help you with recycling your shrink wrap covers; we have two different programs in place to make it an easy process for you.
We are once again partnering with Bay Area Recycling (BARC) this year for our Recycling Run Program. If you are in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois or Ohio — our Recycling Run is available to you. The program is simple and easy:
– Buy Dr. Shrink’s EZ-Fill Bags for only $5.00 each from Dr. Shrink
– Stuff the EZ-Fill Bag with ONLY shrink wrap
– Return the Registration Form to Dr. Shrink to have your pick-up scheduled with BARC.
Our REBAG® Recycling Kit is a different recycling option that we offer.  The REBAG® Kit works across the Continental US. The kit consists of a 30″ x 50″ clear bag with cover removal directions printed on it, a closure device for the bag and a prepaid FedEx shipping label. Each REBAG® will hold the cover from a 26′ power boat or approximately 600 square feet. *Note: All strapping, buckles, vents, zipper doors, etc. must be removed prior to packing the cover in the bag.
Dr. Shrink’s premium shrink wrap is a 100% virgin resin material that is easily recycled into a variety of usable consumer products. Shrink wrap will NOT biograde in a landfill – that’s why it is extremely important to recycle. If neither of these programs work for you, we please ask that you call around to local recycling facilities in your area and see if they will accept this premium #4 LDPE plastic.

Sling-Shield from Dr. Shrink

Sling-Shield is used to protect boat lift slings and vessel hulls during launch and haul-out. It rinses off completely so as to not transfer dirt, grime, etc. from one boat to another and keeps slings clean which extends sling life. Sling-Shield is a simple, one man installation system. It is simply pulled over the sling, cut from the roll and then taped in place.
When boats with bottom paint are lifted by a boat lift, the slings tend to peel the paint from the hull – the Sling-Shield helps stop damage to the bottom paint. It’s also used as a tube to direct air into a boat during service or assembly when attached to a fan or air conditioner. It can also exhaust dust and fumes from inside holds, engine compartments and cabins during service, for personal safety during repairs and assembly. The Sling-Shield will shrink with very little heat; it can be used to protect sail boat masts during transportation and storage.
Now in 6 different widths & available in 300′ or 600′ lengths
6″ x 300′ or 600′ rolls called “Shore Power Sleeves” are great when being used to protect shore power cords, lines and hoses from damage. Keeps dock areas neat and clean during dockage.
– 8″ x 600′ roll is used during dockage to protect dock power cords from damage during tide changes and vessel movement, and to keep dock areas clear and neat. it can be used in boat manufacturing during assembly and marine service to run power cords, air lines, etc. over the side of the boat to prevent damage and marks.
– 12″ x 600′ clear roll (special order) is used as ducting and ventilation tubing.
– 16″ x 300′ or 600′ white rolls are standard for 12″ slings.
– 18″ x 300′ or 600′ white rolls are made for slings with rub-rail pads.
– 36″ x 600′ 8 mil white Yacht Sling-Shield is used on Mega Yacht Mobile 300 ton boat lift slings and larger.
– 1 1/2″ x 108′ Poly Vinyl Tape is used to hold the Sling-Shield to the sling to prevent it from slipping down the sling during usage. This tape will hold even when wet. Other tapes like duct tape or masking tape will not stay in place once submerged in water.
All Sling-Shield products are made in the USA & come with UVI protection.

Work Year Round: Shrink Wrap for the Construction/Scaffold Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction Industry. A construction site can be a vulnerable place – whether it’s the construction of a new building or renovation/add-on to an existing one, there’s the risk of weather eroding all the hard work or ceasing it for a long period of time. For example, water damage – whether it’s rain entering the structure, melting snow, or leaks – is the second most frequent case of loss during building projects.
Dr. Shrink stocks a complete line of products that are capable of wrapping large buildings and scaffolding. Our shrink wrap system is far more effective than traditional tarps and sheeting. Shrink wrap creates a proper enclosure and protects your project from potential damage. Dr. Shrink shrink wrap creates an improved work environment because it allows natural, shadow-free lighting while blocking harmful UV rays. Worker downtime is reduced and the enclosure can even be heated and cooled.
For buildings, an attachment system is placed around the entire base of the building. When the shrink wrap is draped over, it requires immediate attachment. Attach the shrink wrap along the base, pulling any looseness out of the material. Once secured, the entire wrap is heated and shrunk starting from the base and moving upward. If you have any questions about applications, please feel free to give us a call at 800.968.5147 or email us. We’re always here to help.

• Construction Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Construction Industry. When Dr. Shrink started, we were so focused on the short marine and recreation season, we didn’t realize the full potential of a 12 month shrink wrap industry. That is, until we started to identify the major needs in all 6 industries of shrink wrap across the globe. Shrink wrap is becoming the new face of protection in many different industries – from construction and scaffolding to industrial and agricultural. It can be used in so many ways, don’t hold yourself to just one industry.
The scaffolding and containment industry has been on the rise in the list of industries that are reaping the benefits of shrink wrap protection. Dr. Shrink offers 5 different sizes of Flame Retardant shrink wrap in 7, 9, or 12 mil thicknesses. All of our Flame Retardant film meets or exceeds all NFPA 701 specifications. Hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend! We’ll be using our new outdoor patio area today to have a pre-Labor Day BBQ for the team– grilling some hot-dogs and making fried green tomatoes picked from our very own Dr. Shrink garden. Hope you all enjoy the weekend with family and friends.”

• Marine & Recreation Industry

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and services as it relates to the Marine & Recreation Industry. Despite only 3 primary peak months, the Marine and Recreation Industry is one of the most recognized and well-known in the shrink wrap industry. With recognition comes saturation, and this is the most competitive industry in shrink wrap. It is essential to provide quality products and service to your customers– rest assured when you use Dr. Shrink products, you are using the highest quality products on the market.
Typically for Marine and Recreation applications you’re going to use a 6 or 7-mil material. The 6-mil is our thinnest shrink wrap and is used on smaller items such as boats, shed frames, pallets and machinery that will be stored rather than transported. Our 7-mil is the standard thickness for shrink wrapping boat in snow load areas, for light construction jobs and for medium sized machinery that will be transported. Questions on what size wrap to use, what color, or what mil thickness is right for you? Visit our designated website page here or call us at 800-968-5147.

• Save Labor this Labor Day!

All of Dr. Shrink’s products are made with you, the user, in mind to make your lives easier and your shrink wrap jobs hassle-free. We will explain how working with Dr. Shrink’s products will help to eliminate hassles and hurdles before, during, and after the shrink wrapping process.
1) Our shrink wrap knives are made with a safe-hooded blade so you won’t scratch your boat or cut yourself during the shrink wrapping process.
2) Dr. Shrink’s shrink wrap is 100% virgin resin material and will NOT biodegrade in a landfill, so it is very important that it is recycled. We offer our REBAG® Program throughout the Continental US that allows you to recycle your shrink wrap scraps and entire covers. Please don’t throw it in a dumpster!
3) Our Zipper Access Doors are taped on the finished cover of your object and allow you access into it without compromising the durability of the cover.
4) Our Shrinkfast® Extensions are available in 2′, 4′, or 6′ lengths. They help you get all those hard-to-reach surfaces and allow you to be safe without having to be unbalanced on a tall ladder.
5) Dr. Shrink’s Film Racks and Carts are a great way to keep yourself organized and to keep your shrink wrap off the ground. Shrink wrap produces static and it will easily collect dirt and debris if it’s left on the ground. These small pieces of dirt and debris can cause holes in your covers. Our Film Racks easily hold our shrink wrap rolls and keep them off the ground.
If you have any questions on the above products, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 800.968.5147 or email us.

• Dr. Notes – News from Mike

“I am pleased and honored to have celebrated Dr. Shrink’s 25th year in business a couple weeks ago.  I want to say thank you to all who helped make this milestone possible. It was fun to take a trip down memory lane while looking through some of our old marketing materials and products (pictured above). I am proud of the entire team here at Dr. Shrink- we have some of the best employees around. Thank you all for supporting and working with Dr. Shrink and I am looking forward to the next 25+ years with all of you!
As you remove your boat covers for the spring and summer season, please remember to properly recycle your shrink wrap. Take a few minutes to watch our silent movie, Don’t Trash Your Shrink Wrap, to get an idea of just how easy it is to recycle your shrink wrap.
Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions. I enjoy hearing from our customers- email me at drshrink@dr-shrink.com.”

• Shrink Wrap Recycling

Recycling Run 2017 Logo
Recycling your shrink wrap cover is something everyone should be conscious of. Dr. Shrink’s 100% virgin resin material will not biodegrade in a landfill, so it is extremely important that it is recycled. Shrink wrap can be recycled into a variety of usable products such as garbage bags and construction plastic. Dr. Shrink, Inc. cares about preserving the environment and has two recycling programs in place that are easy, effective, and trouble-free.
Our Recycling Run Program makes recycling a breeze. This program is only available in the Great Lakes states: MI, WI, IL, IN, and OH. Click here for more information or visit www.recycling-run.com.
Our REBAG® Recycling Kit is another option that works in every state in the continental U.S. This is a very easy program – all you have to do is purchase a REBAG® kit (consists of a 30″ x 50″ clear bag with cover removal directions printed on it, a closure device for the bag and a prepaid FedEx shipping label) and stuff the bag full of shrink wrap.  Once the prepaid shipping label is on the outside of the bag, you can call FedEx to come and pick it up or take it to a FedEx service center. Each REBAG® will hold approximately 600 square feet of plastic or the cover from a 26′ boat.

If neither of these programs work for you, we ask that you please call around to local recycling facilities in your area and see if they will accept this premium #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene) plastic. Please help us in our efforts to properly recycle this premium plastic!

Trick & Treat Promotion – Day 3

How to Properly Repair Holes in Your Shrink Wrap Cover

TRICK – Repairing holes in your shrink wrap cover is very easy, whether big or small.
– If it’s a small hole, (4″ in diameter or less), follow these easy steps for repair:
1.) Using one of our premium tapes, completely cover the hole. Make sure the tape completely adheres to the shrink wrap cover on all sides, being sure there are no air bubbles. Dr. Shrink stocks tape up to 6″ wide.
2.) Lightly warm the tape with your heat tool to activate the adhesives. Again, making sure to smooth out any air bubbles.
– If t’s a large hole:
1.) Obtain a piece of shrink wrap that will completely cover the hole.
2.) Trim the edges square so that the patch is at least 2″ larges than the hole.
3.) Tape around the complete perimeter of the patch. 3″ or 4″ wide tape is recommended.
4.) Quickly run your heat tool over the patch, being careful to shrink the material without burning the tape.
5.) Once the material cools, the patch house be wrinkle free and as durable as the remainder of the cover.
*Tape should be cut with one of Dr. Shrink’s Film Knives to ensure smooth, non jagged edges.

How to Install the Zipper Access Doors and Prevent Them from Leaking

Dr. Shrink’s Zipper Access Doors are tape on the finished cover to allow access into a shrink wrapped object without compromising the durability of the cover.
TRICK – To install our Zipper Access Doors, just follow these simple steps:
1.) A small piece of tape should be placed on each corner to position the door, then tape applied around the entire perimeter. You must tape all 4 sides of the door to the shrink wrap cover. Press and seal the tape to the cover. *It’s important to use Heat Shrink Tape for the best adhesion.
2.) The doors are installed after the shrink wrap has already been heated. They should be installed where there is easy access into the object and on a vertical surface.
3.) Doors should like a big “U” with the curve at the bottom. Make sure to rub out all the air bubbles and to use the Dr. Shrink Film Knife, so your cuts on the end of the tape are clean.
4.) Once the door is taped on, unzip the door and cut out the hole to access the inside of your object.
