How the biodegradation process works:
An additive is incorporated into the plastic during manufacturing. This additive attracts naturally occurring bacteria in anaerobic environments, such as landfills and soil. Once exposed to these conditions, the bacteria begin breaking down and consuming the plastic. After digestion, no microplastics remain– only biomass is left as a byproduct. In simple terms, once the film is trashed/discarded and reaches a landfill, the degradation process begins naturally.
