February 2023 Shrink Wrap News – from the Industry Leader, Dr. Shrink, Inc.

February Notes from Mike.

Thank you to everyone who came and donated blood a couple weeks ago at our blood drive! We had 17 whole blood donations and 1 double red cell donation! Our next blood drive is scheduled for April 6th with the Versiti Blood Bus.

We’ve had some great feedback and questions regarding expanding into new shrink wrap industries and trying new shrink wrap applications. If you need some guidance or advice on a particular application, I would like to remind you we have a handy form on our website where you can fill in your contact information and upload photos of the item you want to wrap; this helps our technical advisors with recommending the perfect width, length, and mil thickness of shrink wrap for your particular product or application. You can find that form here.

Our travel and trade show schedule is busy the next couple months. We are looking forward to seeing current customers and potential new customers all across the nation at several shows. Please always feel free to contact us if you need anything, and thank you for working with us!

Let's Prepare for Recycling Run 2023!

The Recycling Run program has been the official collection program for shrink wrap boat covers in Michigan for well over 10 years! Join the over 50 marinas, boat dealers, and individuals across the state of Michigan in reducing your waste and keeping our harbors clean!

WHY RECYCLE SHRINK WRAP BOAT COVERS?

  • Keeps the Great Lakes clean and waste free
  • For every bag recycled, there is a savings of 115 Kwh of energy, 13.5 gallons of oil, and 16-20 cubic ft. of landfill space
  • Your business can save money in disposal fees associated with dumpster rental, landfill fees, and hauling
  • Looks great on a Clean Marina application or recertification
  • Recycling marine film fuels the circular economy of Michigan. Recycled plastics from this program are used by domestic manufacturers, giving your used plastic a new life as new products.

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

  • Buy your EZ Fill Recycling Run bags from Dr. Shrink. When you buy your recycling bag(s), it is a one-time fee that covers pick-up, haul-away, and processing directly from your business.
  • Each bag comes with a zip tie to seal the bag, along with instructions on how to register and remove your boat covers. Bags are industrial size and can hold covers from up to a 32′ boat (1 large cover or 1-3 small covers).
  • For Direct Pick-Up of your bags, you must register for a minimum of 15 bags. Locations in the UP must meet a 70 bag minimum.
  • Program Coordinators from the Michigan Recycling Coalition will reach out to schedule a pick-up with your business in June-August.

Keep boat covers/bags clean, dry, and condensed! All Registration Forms are due on June 1st, 2023.

Our Heat Tool Technician recently refurbished several Rapid Shrink 100 Heat Tools and they’re up for sale at a deep discount.

This heat tool puts out 100,000 BTUs and is the perfect heat tool for the Do-It-Yourself shrink wrapper who wraps their own boat, patio furniture, or other recreational items every season. The Rapid Shrink 100 also makes a great back-up or secondary heat tool. This is not intended to be a commercial use heat tool.

As we head into the month of September, many of us in the marine industry are gearing up for what is forecasting to be another busy shrink wrap season. The new boat sales over the past couple of years remains a good sign for marine suppliers and shrink wrap installer companies.

CUSTOMER PICKUP INFORMATION FOR 2022

We are still allowing customers to drive-up to pick up their orders- orders must be placed and paid in advance and you will need to call upon arrival. Our warehouse staff will load your truck or vehicle as long as the following criteria is met:

Dr. Shrink staff will load the material if:

  • The vehicle has a separate trunk, truck bed, or SUV rear gate
  • The vehicle has ample space to load
  • The space is cleared for the material prior to loading (Note, if the space is cluttered or materials/items need to be moved, the customer will be asked to come back after they have made room for the materials)

Dr. Shrink staff will not load the material if:

  • There is insufficient space
  • The space is not cleared
  • The customer wants the product in the back/front seats of the vehicle

Customers are welcome to load their own material if they are physically able. Please make sure you reference the weight and dimensions of your shrink wrap rolls and other items to be able to accommodate your pick-up.

Information to note prior to pick-up:

  • Come to the back of Dr. Shrink for pickup (shipping/receiving area)
  • Please do not block loading dock area
  • Remain in your vehicle and call 800-968-5147 to let us know you are here for pickup

We are open for pickup Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm EST. We will also be open on Saturdays starting September 10th until November 19th from 9:00am-2:00pm EST. If you place an online order for Saturday pickup, the order must be placed Friday by 2:00pm EST.

The safety of our staff and customers is our top priority and we thank you for your understanding!

Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend and took time to remember and honor all the servicemen and servicewomen, our American Heroes, who have given their all for America.

Dr. Shrink is excited to introduce a new product to our line– the Scaff Hat! The Scaff Hat is used to prevent scaffold leg ends (and scaffold tube/pin edges) from penetrating and/or poking through the shrink wrap. Please read through the designated section below and contact us with any and all questions!

I would like to remind our Michigan customers of our Recycling Run for shrink wrap covers in need of recycling. Registration Forms are due today (Wednesday, June 1st) – please see the section below for more details. If you are located in other states, we have a few other partner programs in place.

SCAFF HAT

Dr. Shrink is excited to announce a new product into our lineup – the Scaff Hat. The main purpose of the Scaff Hat is to prevent scaffold leg ends (and scaffold tube/pin edges) from penetrating and/or poking through the shrink wrap. The Scaff Hat creates a smooth, rounded surface to support the shrink wrap scaffolding enclosure.

Selling Points:

  • Softens sharp scaffold tube/pin edges
  • No need for taping/padding off the scaffold leg ends
  • Bright safety orange color stands out on perimeter fencing/scaffold leg ends. The color is also great around excavation as a danger alert.

This month the Dr. is highlighting products and shrink wrap applications as they relate to the Construction & Scaffolding Industry. Government and large building contacts will often require scaffolding and exterior containment and shrink wrap is the most cost effective and durable material that can be used. Our registration for the Recycling Run for 2022 will be complete by the end of the day, today! We hope all of your summer toys, boats, and patio furniture are unwrapped and being enjoyed!

The forms for our Recycling Run Program are due by Wednesday, June 1st. If you don’t get your forms into us by then, then you might not make it on the pickup list for this year, so please get them in! *Just a reminder – this program is only available in Michigan.*

Dr. Shrink’s film is 100% virgin resin made of #4 Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and is one of the most common plastic types AND is 100% recyclable at most local recycling centers! All you need to do is remember to keep it C.0.0.L. which is our easy reminder to make sure your wrap is CLEAN, has ZERO accessories (vents, strapping, doors, etc.), has ZERO moisture (be sure it is dry), and is LOOSE when packed for recycling.

Please remember to keep your boat covers clean, dry and condensed.

Another interesting use for shrink wrap! A customer used some scrap 8-mil shrink wrap to redo some worn out boat cushions that make up the “floor” of his cuddy cabin that is used for storage. The customer was able to salvage the cushions with shrink wrap and it was a less expensive option than paying for custom made cushions. Please keep in mind this area is used for storage purposes on the boat– shrink wrap is very slippery when wet!

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to send congratulatory wishes, messages and posts regarding our 30 Years in Business milestone. It was great hearing from customers, friends, and distributors all across the world! What an honor it has been to have this connection and working relationship with all of you over the years. I look forward to working with you for many years to come.

This month the Dr. is highlighting our Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting (VCI) Shrink Wrap as it relates to the Industrial & Manufacturing industry. This is one of the fastest growing year-round shrink wrap markets; it can yield great business as customers demand packaging solutions along with corrosion inhibiting protection. Top industrial wrapping specialists can also compete with other protection methods to show greater return on investment for their clients.

Dr. Shrink Celebrates 30 Years as a Global Leader in Shrink Wrap

Manistee, Michigan – Dedication to its customers, world-class customer service, premium product offerings, and willingness to provide experienced advice on the proper way to shrink wrap are just a few of the reasons Dr. Shrink, Inc. has been in business so long. The company celebrates 30 years of success in April 2022.

Starting in 1985, before the birth of Dr. Shrink, Inc., Mike Stenberg worked as a shrink wrap installer wrapping boats, machinery, airplanes, buildings, etc. for about seven years, where he perfected the trade and acquired skills to make shrink wrapping easier and more efficient. As shrink wrapping became more prevalent and widespread, Mike saw a more pressing need for distribution of premium shrink wrap and installation supplies; thus his focus shifted from being a shrink wrap installer to a distributor. In 1992, Mike retreated from the actual shrink wrap installation work to focus on the selling and distributorship of shrink wrap materials—and this is when Dr. Shrink, Inc. was born.

Dr. Shrink, Inc. was founded in 1992, by Mike & Jill Stenberg in Manistee, Michigan, as a two-person operation in their home. It has since grown into a 20+ employee international corporation that distributes its products across the world.

“Taking a step back and thinking about the last 30 years, it’s humbling,” says Mike Stenberg, President & Founder of Dr. Shrink, Inc. “Jill and I started Dr. Shrink, Inc. in our home and distributed products out of our garage. Our initial vision for the company was to offer expert shrink wrap installation advice, technical support, and provide excellent customer service—all while selling the highest quality, premium shrink wrap and accessories as a “one stop shop” for all things shrink wrap. Today we couldn’t be more proud of this company, and the people we have on our team. Dr. Shrink, Inc. has not only supplied its premium 100% virgin resin shrink wrap, it has also been a leader and innovator inside the shrink wrap industry the past 30 years. Spring is here, although you wouldn’t know it from the weather in Michigan! Snow and sleet yesterday made for icy roads today– hoping to see some spring weather soon! On that note, I hope you have your recycling plans in place for when those shrink wrap covers come off your boat and/or outdoor items. Please see our section below on ways you can properly recycle used shrink wrap covers. For those in Michigan, you can purchase our EZ-Fill bags and schedule your pick-up with our recycling partner! If you are located outside of Michigan, you can still recycle your shrink wrap film. To start, call your local recycling center and ask them if they will accept #4 LDPE plastic sheeting. Dr. Shrink Celebrates 30 Years as a Global Leader in Shrink Wrap

Manistee, Michigan – Dedication to its customers, world-class customer service, premium product offerings, and willingness to provide experienced advice on the proper way to shrink wrap are just a few of the reasons Dr. Shrink, Inc. has been in business so long. The company celebrates 30 years of success in April 2022.

Starting in 1985, before the birth of Dr. Shrink, Inc., Mike Stenberg worked as a shrink wrap installer wrapping boats, machinery, airplanes, buildings, etc. for about seven years, where he perfected the trade and acquired skills to make shrink wrapping easier and more efficient. As shrink wrapping became more prevalent and widespread, Mike saw a more pressing need for distribution of premium shrink wrap and installation supplies; thus his focus shifted from being a shrink wrap installer to a distributor. In 1992, Mike retreated from the actual shrink wrap installation work to focus on the selling and distributorship of shrink wrap materials—and this is when Dr. Shrink, Inc. was born.

Dr. Shrink, Inc. was founded in 1992, by Mike & Jill Stenberg in Manistee, Michigan, as a two-person operation in their home. It has since grown into a 20+ employee international corporation that distributes its products across the world.

“Taking a step back and thinking about the last 30 years, it’s humbling,” says Mike Stenberg, President & Founder of Dr. Shrink, Inc. “Jill and I started Dr. Shrink, Inc. in our home and distributed products out of our garage. All you need to do is remember to keep it C.0.0.L. which is our easy reminder to make sure your wrap is CLEAN, has ZERO accessories (vents, strapping, doors, etc.), has ZERO moisture (be sure it is dry), and is LOOSE when packed for recycling.

How To Properly Remove a Shrink Wrap Cover

Take a look at these quick and simple steps to removing a shrink wrap cover for recycling.

  1. Remove the boat cover by cutting above the perimeter band going around the boat. Using a Dr. Shrink Film Knife makes this step quick and easy; our Film Knife has a safe-hooded blade to help protect your boat from scratches.
  2. After taking the cover off the boat, remove buckles, vents, all strapping, and perimeter band. Dispose in trash normally.
  3. Stuff ONLY your shrink wrap boat cover into the EZ-Fill recycling bag, stuffing firmly to the bottom.
  4. Zip-tie the bag shut at the base of where the plastic inside stops, so no water or dirt can get inside.
  5. Store in a covered location where water and debris are minimized.

February Notes from Mike.

Hope the first month of 2022 has treated everyone well. If you are in the shrink wrap installation business, always remember to “think outside the boat” for year-round installation opportunities. This time of year does not need to be your “off-season” in shrink wrapping! There is almost always something being transported down the road or sitting outdoors that could use shrink wrap protection.

Dr. Shrink’s new Reinforced Shrink Wrap is designed for shrink wrap applications requiring higher durability and protection over the use of non-reinforced standard shrink wrap. Reinforced Shrink Wrap is available in 20’, 33’, and 40’ widths. All sizes are 100′ in length and have 10-mil thickness. 

Our Reinforced Shrink Wrap is a white four-layer reinforced shrink wrap that combines the strength of scrim-reinforcement with the heat shrink properties of conventional shrink wrap. This product is engineered to be lightweight and flexible for exceptional cold-crack resistance in low temperatures. Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday with family and friends. Dr. Shrink had a nice holiday party with our team in early December followed by a visit from Santa for the kids.

We had our annual Dr. Shrink Employee Christmas Party and the kids had a visit from Santa last month. It was nice to be able to get together and celebrate a great year. We are looking forward to another great year.

As we launch into the busy holiday season at the same time as we conclude our busy marine season, there are two things I’d like to take the time to mention:

Number 1: Our industry was met with unprecedented challenges this season and we all met those challenges head-on, together. As you are aware, the winterization industry in general experienced longer than normal manufacturing and delivery times, and shipping across all carriers experienced delays due to staff shortages and terminal back-ups. We worked together and got through this together, and I would like to say thank you for your understanding and patience through a tumultuous season.

And number 2: I reflect on how thankful I am. Thankful to lead this incredible team at Dr. Shrink, and thankful to have the relationship I have with all of you, our valued customers, distributors and friends. The past 20 months have been filled with highs and lows, and I am humbled by the support, outreach and determination to continue to advance our industry. We would not be here today if it wasn’t for all of you. I hope we have surpassed your expectations in both customer service and supplying the highest quality shrink wrap materials in the market.

On behalf of all of us here at Dr. Shrink, I wish you, your family and friends well and I hope you have a very happy holiday season.
